Mota's Job Shadow Reflection
The person I shadowed was Roger Mota who owns and manages a convenience store in New Britain called Mota’s Convenience Store, LLC. Going into the job shadow my thoughts were focused on what I would learn from doing this job shadow. For example I was thinking that I would learn something of value which I did learn after completing the job shadow. While doing the job shadow Roger showed me around the convenience store and how he organizes he’s products. He would then describe to me the process of running he is own business, I learned that it takes a lot of work to maintain a convenience store. Majority of the work consisted of communicating with his vendors and making sure that his items are delivered on time and keeping track of money being spent. He would also talk about how communication is key in his job for example he would communicate with his customers in order to know what items they would like to see. Also communication between his employers so he can get to know them better and build a relationship so that he can be able to trust them when he’s not present at his store.
While doing the job shadow I saw that a lot of the requirements needed to sustain a well functioning business tied in with the knowledge received from school. Although Roger only has a high school diploma he strongly advocated that going to college and earning a college degree would have been beneficiary to him and his business. So one of the things I learned was that education would play a big role in any job that you have. One of the most important lessons I learned was when I asked him which regarded why he had decided to start his own business. He told me that before starting this business he was working in retail for six years and he liked the idea of starting a business from the ground up and becoming successful. What I learned from that was that if I put the time and effort into what I wanted to do in life it can be accomplished through hard work and patience.
